Zeitgeist - The spirit of now

Tales from Reception

Posted July 25th, 2016 by admin

Although you may not have guessed it thanks to the somewhat sporadic weather, summer is here! And as fate would have it, so was Christmas. Yes, that’s right six months on from the catastrophic floods on Boxing Day the people of Hebden Bridge put on quite a show. Shop windows were decorated, mince pies were baked (and eaten!) and a jolly ol’ time was had. Yet another amazing example of the community spirit in these parts, it was such a joy to see!
The Hebden Royd Alternative Christmas coincided with the Hebden Bridge Arts Festival, meaning the town has been a veritable hive of activity. With all things creative being celebrated, there has been many opportunities to discover and enjoy local artists and craftspeople. Especially thanks to the Open Studios which ran 1st 2nd & 3rd July, which did exactly what is says on the tin, giving locals a chance to visit the homes and work spaces of over 90 artists and in order to peruse their offerings, drink in some local culture and maybe even make a purchase.
13620749_1190356191009151_2295216997085316309_nWith all this creativity in the air, we thought it made sense to run an arty ‘design a hairstyle’ competition, giving people chance to get crafty in the hopes of winning a free haircut. We can now reveal that the winner is Frances Earnshaw, her entry ‘Anime Girl’, a lovely pencil sketch, has bagged her an appointment with Sam! Congratulations Frances, and thank you for taking part.

1460On another note, it is so good to see the Hebden Bridge Picture House back up and running and it is more important than ever to make the most of this local treasure. It is such a treat to be able to enjoy such a wide variety of films, old, new, mainstream, foreign, independent, all with a mug of tea and a slice of homemade cake. Personally, i’ll be taking in the new Ab Fab movie which takes the elevensies spot on Thursday 28th July. Debbie will be taking Cissy and friends to see The Secret Life of Pets, which starts from Monday 25th July. We’ve got a couple of programs in the salon or pick one up from outside the cinema to find a film that takes your fancy, they really do need our support and we would hate to see the Picture House close for good.
